WELCOME

Our First Communion program is a two-year journey that helps children grow in their understanding of the Eucharist and their relationship with Jesus Christ. The program typically begins in 1st grade, with children receiving the Sacrament of First Holy Communion at the end of 2nd grade. Through regular catechesis, prayer, and active participation in parish life, students are lovingly prepared to receive Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time.

Year One

Year One formation begins as early as 1st grade. This is a foundational year that must be completed before Year Two preparatory classes and includes participation.

Year Two

Year Two formation begins as early as 2nd grade for all children who have completed Year One of First Communion preparation. In this year, children will prepare in communion with their peers for reception of the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist. Some requirements expected to be met during this year are regular participation at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, family participation in Reconciliation and Communion retreats, and determination of readiness by parents, catechetical team, and pastor.

FAQ

What is the First Communion and Reconciliation program?

This is a two-year sacramental preparation program that begins in 1st grade for baptized Catholic children. It prepares students to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion after they reach the age of reason (typically age 7 or older), and when they are deemed ready by their parents, the Parish Catechetical Leader (PCL), and the pastor.

What are the key components?

First Reconciliation: Instruction focuses on understanding God's love and forgiveness, recognizing right and wrong, and learning the process of Confession. Children are introduced to the confessional setting and meet the priests to foster comfort.

First Eucharist: Catechesis covers knowledge of Jesus, His Real Presence in the most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist, the Liturgy, and how to receive Communion.

When do the sacraments take place

Both First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion are celebrated in the second year of formation.

First Reconciliation takes place earlier in the year, see your Faith Formation Schedule

First Holy Communion is celebrated in May, it is celebrated at one communal Mass

Who is required to participate in parish formation

All students in Year Two—whether enrolled in public, private, or homeschool education—must attend parish-based catechesis.

What are the expectations for families?

Parental involvement is integral, with support in the home setting encouraged and participation in a First Reconciliation Family Retreat and First Holy Eucharist Family Retreat required. This comprehensive approach aims to deepen the spiritual understanding and engagement of both children and their families in the sacramental life of the Church.

What are the requirements for participating in the program

To be enrolled in the sacramental preparation program, families must provide and commit to the following:

-A copy of the child’s Baptism certificate (due with registration form)

-Faith Formation registration form and fee

-Family registration in the parish (Register online here!)

-Attendance at a Parent Meeting

-Participation in both the First Reconciliation Family Retreat and First Holy Eucharist Family Retreat (see Faith Formation Schedule)

-Attendance at First Holy Communion rehearsal

-No more than 2 excused absences per year

How do I know if my child is ready

Readiness for the sacraments is a discernment process that involves the child, parents, catechists, the PCL, and the pastor. Readiness is based on the child’s understanding of the sacrament, regular participation in Mass, and completion of formation requirements.

What if my child hasn't been Baptized yet or is older than first grade?

For minors (those 7-18 years old) desiring the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Holy Eucharist, and Confirmation) please contact the faith formation coordinator. A meeting with the coordinator and the pastor is required to assess the needs of the child(ren). Sacrament preparation is typically a two-year process.
